Midwest Interfaith Immigration Summit: Mobilizing for Humane Reform

The Ohio Council of Churches is joining an Interfaith Immigration Coalition to sponsor this event to work towards educating and mobilizing in support of fair and humane immigration reform.  Each day will feature speakers and workshops dealing with immigration issues such as: legislation, detention and justice, root causes and moving from education to advocacy.  Early bird registration: (until August 15) is $95.00 per person.  Full registration details. Pedaling Parsons 2008 Project and Rides

The Pedaling Parsons of East Ohio Conference will be supporting Sam’s House – A Nepalese orphanage during their rides this year.  Sam's House embraces the future by providing a home, family, education, and love to abandoned and orphaned children in Nepal.  As Nepal works to overcome its present challenges, Sam's House teaches respect, friendship and love of country.    Roadbike Ride will be September 8-12 (Registration Deadline: August 11) that will be a Southeast Ohio Road Tour: North Canton, Cadiz, Coshocton, Mt. Vernon, Wooster.  Ride bike-friendly roads and paved trails through some of the most beautiful areas in our state with lakes, hills, quaint little towns and Amish buggies.  This is a great way to see and appreciate the state and meet some folks in the towns and churches we will visit.  This ride is recommended for cyclists with road bikes and experience in riding on roads with some traffic.  Cost of the tour is $130 and includes support services, breakfast and lunches during the tour.  The East Ohio United Methodist Foundation has proudly sponsored the Pedaling Parsons for the past thirteen years.  Each year the foundation has provided grants for brochures and publicity of the tours.  These grants make it possible for 100% of every dollar donated to go directly to the project we are riding for.  These grants help us get the word out to more people so we can raise more money for mission.  Anyone interested in more information or riding with the Pedaling Parsons can email or call (330) 499-2330.   Donations for the project can be sent to Pedaling Parsons, 1720 Schneider St. NW. East Ohio UMW 2008 Schools of Christian Mission:
“Living the Sacred” is the 2008 theme for the UMW Schools of Christian Mission.  The spiritual growth study is “I Believe in Jesus” which every participant will experience.  The geographic study is “Israel and Palestine” and the social impact study is “Giving Our Hearts Away: Native American Survival.”  The Lakeside event is Friday – Sunday, September 12-14 and is a Weekend Event for Adults.  Lakeside registration deadline is August 15.  Some of the presenters for these events are Rev. Educational Opportunities Trips

MTSO Fall Open House:

The East Ohio Festival of Caring will be held at the Richland County Fairgrounds in Mansfield.  Now is the time for your church to decide how you might wish to participate in this mission promotion opportunity.  The goal of the Festival of Caring is to support local and global missions through education and fund raising.  Your church may want to have a fund raiser at the festival or you may want to simply plan to attend.  Every local church should have a Festival of Caring book with the listed fundraising ideas.  Deadline for registering for a fundraising activity is August 22.  There are also many activities that you or your church can participate in on September 22.  For a booklet  contact (800) 831-3972, ext. 135 or lmartin@eocumc.com

After The Caring Concert

The Conference Council on Youth Ministries is adding a new feature to the Festival of Caring  on Saturday, September 20.  The “After the Caring Concert” featuring Christian rockers The Afters with Matt Maher will be in concert at the fairgrounds grandstand.  Tickets go on sale July 1 and will be $15 pre-sale and $20 at the gate.  There is a $2 parking fee per car.  For more information contact  (800) 831-3972. ext. 132 or email.

Re-vitalize Your Congregation for Mission and Ministry in your Local Community

The Town & Rural Resource Program (TARRP) in partnership with United Theological Seminary is offering clergy and laity from small and medium size churches in rural, urban or suburban settings, an opportunity to learn how to re-vitalize a congregation for mission and ministry in its local community. As part of UTS's WINGS program, the three session program features Dan Dick as keynote presenter, addressing the topic of congregational health and vitality. He is the author of the popular book "Vital Signs: A Pathway to Congregational Wholeness."

In addition, particpants will learn how to assess their leadership style, how to initiate congregational revitalization, barriers to health and vitality in a congregation, how to identify and address dysfunctionality in a congregation and other topics related to congregational health and vitality.

The program will be offered in three, day-and-a-half sessions, starting with the first one which is Sept. 26-27, 2008 in Zanesville. Both individuals and teams of individuals from churches are invited to attend; the total cost for all three sessions is $150 for individuals, $125 each for two people from the same church and $100 for teams of three or more.

Stewardship Academy
An intensive examination of local church stewardship theory and practice, involving three two-day events, extending over a full year of study and involvement begins October 2 & 3 at Montrose Zion UMC in Akron.  Sponsored by the East Ohio United Methodist Foundation and the East Ohio Stewardship Committee. Academy will be led by Rev. Dr. Wayne Barrett, president and executive director of the UM Foundation of the West Michigan Conference, and Rev. Offering Christ in a Multi-Religious World

Methodist Theological School in Ohio will host "Offering Christ in a Multi-Religious World". This year’s Institute will focus on presenting Jesus in multi-religious societies of the 21st century with authenticity, sensitivity, and humility. The keynote speaker, Dr. Ajith Fernando, is a Methodist theologian and the author of 13 books published in 13 languages. He has been national director of Youth for Christ in war-torn Sri Lanka since 1976, living his entire life among people of other faiths. Rev. National Youth Worker Convention

Discipleship University:
Discipleship University is one of the key strategies of GBOD for addressing revitalization of congregations.  DU is designed to assist congregational leaders to focus and align their efforts for making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.  Central to Discipleship University is Burning Bush.  We will be launching the Burning Bush experience with an inaugural class starting October 9-12,  in Nashville, TN.  Through this two-year process (five weekend experiences), congregational teams will design and begin implementing a discipleship plan for their congregation.  As part of the experience, congregations will also have a GBOD staff member assigned to them as a guide to work with them in between the scheduled meetings. Finding The Church's Voice on Immigration
Bishop Minerva Carcaño of the Desert Southwest Conference of The United Methodist Church will be a featured speaker at “Welcoming the Sojourner — Finding the Church’s Voice on Immigration" at the Lisle Hilton in Naperville, Ill.  Carcaño is chair of the United Methodist Council of Bishops committee on immigration.  "Welcoming the Sojourner" is co-sponsored by the North Central Jurisdiction of The United Methodist Church and the denomination’s General Board of Church & Society (GBCS).  Other featured speakers include Bishop Hee-Soo Jung of the Northern Illinois Conference; the Rev. Change the World
The United Methodist Committee on Relief will co-sponsor the Change The World Conference at Ginghamsburg UMC in Tipp City, Ohio (north of Dayton).  Featured speakers include the Rev. Adam Hamilton, pastor of Church of the Resurrection in Leawood, Kansas; author and church consultant, Brian McLaren; Sojourners magazine editor and author, Rev. Jim Wallis; and Rev. Mike Slaughter, pastor of Ginghamsburg UMC.  Nearly 30 breakout sessions and workshops will be offered, including two led by UMCOR staff.  A high school track and a Ministry by Strengths intensive are also available during the conference. The Christian Educators Fellowship and Preaching from the Center joint conference, "Blessed to Be a Blessing," will bring together two great events – the CEF national conference and Preaching from the Center (sponsored by the General Board of Discipleship) in Albuquerque, NM - Hyatt Regency Hotel and Albuquerque Convention Center. Motorcycle Ride and Concert

The Beach City, Dundee and Justus United Methodist Churches are sponsoring a motorcycle ride and free concert. Registration 10:30 a.m., first bikes out at 11:00 a.m.  Starting at Dundee UMC with finish point at Dundee UMC at 3:30 p.m.  The ride will be approximately 90 miles  Pleasant Valley and Gnadenhutten U.M.C. are the two designated stops. There will be  live music, guest speakers and an afternoon luncheon following the ride. Asking for school supplies as donations to fill the shelves at the Fairless Food Cupboard in Brewster. Sixth Annual Mission Auction
Mission Auctions at York Church in the past have helped save lives by providing much needed transportation to missionary Beth Ferrell.  They’ve also helped to provide life saving drinking water by funding a well in Africa.  There will be hundreds of items available for silent auction, plus a live auction and puppet show.  Some of those items include: flowers, painting services, jewelry, baskets of goodies and a shop vacuum.  12:30 p.m. starting time – silent auction begins at 8:30 a.m.  Proceeds go to Nothing But Nets, a global, grassroots campaign to save lives by preventing malaria, a leading killer of children in Africa.  Every $10 buys a net and can save a life. The Centenary UMC in Youngstown invites the public to share in a two day historic celebration of religious growth . To kick-off the grand opening of the new ministry, CUMC Coffeehouse, at 7:00 p.m., husband and wife comedic team, Kerri Pomarolli and Ron McGehee will perform live in the River of Life Community Center.  Tickets will go on sale August 10th.  Pre-sale tickets will be 5 tickets for $20.  Tickets at the door will be $5.  Reserved seating will be $10.  Plan to come early for the Comedy Outreach and visit the Coffeeshop where proceeds from the donations will benefit our Care and Share program to help less fortunate then ourselves with food and utilities. The Coffeehouse Grand Opening Weekend will also include a 5th Quarter on Friday, September 19 immediately following the Newcomerstown/Malvern game. On Saturday, September 20 at 9:00 a.m. we will be having SLIME TIMEfor kids with something for the adults in the coffeehouse while they wait.

Fall Fashion & Accessories Extravaganza

The Senior Ministry at Manchester UMC will present this event at 3 p.m.
The event will feature fall fashions, hors d/oeuvres, jewelry and accessories. There will be an opportunity to purchase items seen in the show. Red Bird Mission Craft Show

 Granger UMC, Medina County is hosting Red Bird Mission Crafts on Saturday from 10AM to 4PM and Sunday from 12 to 2PM.  The Red Bird Mission, located in Southeastern Kentucky is an agency of The Red Bird Missionary Conference related to the General Board of Global Ministries of the UMC.  Red Bird Mission has a school, medical center, community outreach, community housing improvement and economic opportunities.
