Summer Outreach Activities at Broadway UMC, Cleveland

2008 is the third year the congregation of Cleveland: Broadway has hosted a summer day camp for youth and teens living in the north Broadway/Slavic Village community.  This year was also the second year that summer camp concluded with a festival for all campers, their families and friends in the community.

Each day started with energized singing, check-in and prayer. This year’s camp theme was Learn Art; Express Yourself.   Artists helped campers design their dream homes using plywood as their canvas.  All art was displayed during the festival. Two budding artists sold their original work during the festival. Campers also enjoyed sidewalk art.  In addition to designing their dream home, these campers participated in creative dance, African drumming, jewelry and mask making.

The 2008 three-week camp concluded with the July 26th Broadway United Methodist Festival. 200 individuals filled  bags with take home items furnished by the Cleveland Foodbank.   The lives of the attendees were enriched with free health screenings; dental care awareness; story time, face painting, bungee run and other games for the entire family. Children were registered for BUMC’s Wednesday evening Kids Café through the Cleveland Foodbank. Other sponsors included Metro Health Center; North Broadway businesses; the Lefelars; the Austin Foundation and the people of The United Methodist Church.

Day campers were grouped into three teams by age.  (Photo w/4 young adults) This is a group shot of team C – our seven and under age group.  Camp helpers, Ashley and Roy (couple on the right side of the photo) attend BUMC and Terrance (Community of Living Hope) and Syrrarah, provided support for our younger campers.  Team C’s day included improving math skills (picture of Myrtis Litman, mother of BUMC member Lea Ann Russell, helps campers with math); time to work on reading at the Broadway library, creative art and outdoor games.
