PATHWAYS TO MINISTRY
The Pathways to Ministry Internship Program of the East Ohio Conference was established through the cooperative effort of the Episcopal Office and the Board of Ordained Ministry. Its purposes are:
The Ministry Internship Program is for those who are open to the idea of God’s calling. It’s an opportunity for individuals to discover their gifts and graces, and how they relate to serving Christ and the church.
United Methodist college students who have completed one year of undergraduate study, and who are open to serving in The United Methodist Church, may apply for the Ministry Internship Project. East Ohio Conference churches may apply to be a host site for an intern.
The program provides experience in Christian ministry within a United Methodist setting; with the intern being mentored by a clergy member and a committee of lay members of the host church.
The mentoring clergy and lay members must participate in a 1-day orientation prior to the start of the internship. While the student will begin the internship by completing a mandatory 2-day orientation, and end it by reflecting for 1-day to process the experience.
During the 12-week summer internship, students can either stay with a host family or make their own living arrangements. Interns will be responsible for their own meals, transportation, and personal expenses.
Here is what some of our former interns have shared about their experience:
“For anyone who is thinking about pursuing ministry, or any type of work in the church, this internship is more than an exceptional experience. I know now that my calling to be a minister is solidified due to the experiences I had, and relationships I made during this internship.” - Tony Walsh
“The experiences I had were very constructive to my discernment in ministry. Although I had already discerned a call to youth ministry, I was able to explore the pathways to becoming an ordained pastor and refine my ministry skills. I am very thankful that I was accepted as an intern.” - Ruth Clifford
